Sanlampark in Orchards, Johannesburg, is a housing complex for young- white- couples with/without children on their way to become house owners themselves. It is not a new town in the general sense, however it is interesting as it represents a different housing system than the black townships.
The complex comprises of 224 dwellings and is as mentioned primarily occupied by young families or couples. The apartments are rented as it is considered that apartments are steppingstones towards buying a houses, and the complex is therefore in a certain sense contemporary housing - but quite nice one.
The network of roads is divided between pedestrians and cars, and there are outdoor facilities where the children can play. Some of the apartments also have private gardens and all of them have balconies. The whole complex is surrounded by a fence to give the residents privacy from outsiders.
