Karamay City is an industrial city directly under the jurisdiction of the Xinjiang Autonomous Region, located on the northwestern fringe of the Junggar Basin and at the eastern foot of the Jiayir Mountains. It rises 922 meters above sea level and covers an area of 10082.7 square kilometers. It is 400 kilometers from capital Urumqi and contains around 300.000 inhabitants. Karamay City was founded by theState Council in 1958 due to the proximity of oilfields in the Goby Desert. In 1940 the Dushanzi oil field was explored and taken in to production. In 1955 a new oil feed was discovered about 100 km of Kuytun, which was called Karamay. Karamay means "black oil" in the local Uygur Muslim language. Before construction the site of Karamay was a barren semi-desert. During the past half century Karamay City has developed into the largest oilfield in western China.
