In 1938 it was granted town status. In 2004 the surrounding Artyom former urban-type settlements were annexed to the city. Although the town has its own municipal government, it is often considered a satellite of Vladivostok and the suggestions are frequently made to abolish it as an independent agglomeration and make it a part of the municipality of Vladivostok.
