LFZ is located on the tip of Lekki Peninsula in the south-east of Lagos State, one of the fastest-growing areas in Nigeria in recent years. The project for this new town is the result of the agreement established in May 2006 between the Lagos and Chinese Authorities who gave birth to the China-Africa Lekki Investment Ltd (CALI, previously named as CCECC-Beyond International Investment & Development Co., Ltd.).
Lekki FTZ was planned as a special multi-functional economic zone and a new modern city with several south-west and north-south traffic corridors. It would set the basic criterions for land uses and development of important public facilities and infrastructures in both the north and south peninsulas. It also provides essential guidelines for the regional planning of the entire commercial region. Lekki Free Trade Zone (“Lekki FTZ”) covers a total area of about 30 square kilometres with 27 square kilometres for urban construction purposes, which would accommodate a total resident population of 3,400,000. The Lekki Free Zone is an ambitious project with the potential to transform Nigeria’s economy, but it is still very much in development. The key focus now is to make the zone viable for business and, more importantly, to set up an unprecedented suite of infrastructure and services, but for the moment the development of the city is still in its preliminary phase.
The spatial layout of the master plan includes two centres of commercial trading, logistics and warehousing operations, two functional axes for the development of financial and commercial businesses and functional districts. They include the North Urban Zone which will be largely residential, the Natural Park Zone which will consist environmental and nature conservation park, the South Urban Zone which will include the existing and new residential developments along with commercial and mixed uses, as well as light industry, and the Atlantic Coastal Zone which will mainly be developed for tourism and recreational activities. The city’s infrastructure also includes roads, a deep seaport and a new airport. Together, they aim to capitalize on Lagos as an essential distribution hub and facilitate international access to West African markets.
