Festac Town was built in 1977 on the initiative of the Federal government of Nigeria, to host around 45.000 visitors along with Nigerian employees and officers moving to the city in occasion of the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC), which is the reason for the town’s name.
The image of Festac Town had to evoke modernity and it was equipped with all the necessary infrastructure and services. At the conclusion of the festival the Federal Government of Nigeria allocated the housing and landed properties to eventual winners who participated in a ballot. Initial regulations forbade such winners from renting and disposing-of the properties to third parties.
