Monarto was part of the Whitlam Government's new cities program 1972-75. The city was supposed to absorb much of the population growth of Adelaide. It received $10.5 mio. from Federal funds for land purchase and trees planting 1973-76. Revision of the predicted population growth led to the cancellation of the city in 1980. Today trees and bushes leave visible trace of the city never built.
