The town of South Hedland is situated approximately 1,800 kilometres from Perth and 20 kilometres from the township of Port Hedland.

The town was established in the early 1970s to house the workforce associated with the establishment of the shipping operations of the Mt Newman Mining Company. South Hedland town has about 8,500 residents, most of whom either work for, or are associated with, the mining industry.
