Tom Price was constructed along with another mining town, Dampier, after a huge iron ore, now known as Mt Tom Price, was discovered in 1962 and the Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd formed. There is a mine in each city, a railroad between the two and a port in Dampier. Despite a very limited infrastructure in the remote Pilbara, it took only 19 months to commission the initial Mount Tom Price mine infrastructure, build the shipping port at Dampier and the two towns.
