Coyhaique is located 68 kilometers to the east of Puerto Aysen on the confluence of the river Rio Simpson and Rio Coyhauque. From 1974 it has been the Capital of the XI Region of Chile. It has a very important commercial activity. All the public and institutional buildings are located around a square . The urban outline of Coyhaique is in the form of the boot of a huaso, the town square is in the form of a pentagon.
