Puerto Aysen was founded in 1914 as a dock and warehouse for the enterprise Ganadera SIA. It is the capital of the Aysen province. During the 1920's the population consisted of those involved in activities connected to this enterprise. Puerto Aysen was the principal port of the area, but the large quantity of sediment dragged by the Aysen river blocked its natural bay. For this reason the port was transferred 15 kilometers to the west where Puerto Chacabuco originated.
The city is built along traditional lines, with ancient trees and antique buildings. Currently all of the principal service activities of the territory are concentrated here. In the 60's the city got reconstructed, and many public buildings were constructed.
