In the early 60s a small fishing village of 500 people, Turangi was chosen as the site for an ambitious power scheme. A new hydro town was to house and provide services for the construction workers employed on the hydro development. Construction began on both in 1964. The town mushroomed, and four years later the population peaked with 6,500. The town was planned by the Ministry of Works. Like other new towns designed by Ministry of Works planners, Turangi's street pattern was layed out with curves and cul-de-sacs, pedestrian shopping centre and uniform houses. Since 1964 thousands of trees have sprung up. Post power schemes estimatations were close to today's population of just over 4,000.
