INTI collaborates with the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) on a four-week Atelier Almere. Participants are 28 Brazilian students Urban Management & Development: Sustainable Urbanism (UMDSU). It is an interdisciplinary group trained in architecture and civil engineering. Atelier Almere started with an introduction week organized by INTI from May 12 until May 16. An intense program was offered with lectures from experts of the City of Almere and independent researchers, interviews with residents, architects and entrepreneurs, workshops with youth from Almere and excursions to Almere Buiten, Almere Stad, Oosterwold and Homeruskwartier. Linda Vlassenrood (Program Director INTI) and Ore Fika (program coordinator of the UMDSU program) moderated the program.
In the next three weeks, all students are supposed to determine, design and develop innovative plans and options on the site of the horticulture exhibition known as Almere Floriade that will take place in 2022. The students are asked to provide insights on how the Floriade can be sustainably developed into a spectacular new area, which will be the beginning of a new city district and not merely a horticulture exhibition stage in 2022. Their proposals should aid the city of Almere in achieving its vision (Almere 2.0) which includes its ambitious growth plans to accommodate 60,000 new homes and 100,000 extra work places and also enhance the placement of the Randstad as a top sustainable economic region in the Netherlands and in Europe at large.
