Excursion to Nowa Huta
11-14 April 2010

From 11-14 April 2010, INTI visited the socialist new town of Nowa Huta (Poland). Construction of Nowa Huta, literally meaning ‘new steel works’, started in 1949 and was intended as a socialist Utopia: a workers’ city next to intellectual and bourgeois Cracow.

The excursion was organized within the frame of the course New Towns on the Frontier of Geopolitics. Students from TU Delft and University of Amsterdam are participating. The multidisciplinary team consists of students in the field of architecture, urban planning, social geography and spatial planning.

The aim of the excursion was to study this city and produce essays, maps, pictures and observations which will in turn make up an alternative travel guide to Nowa Huta - because of course new towns are never included in the regular tourist guides... Central question remains: how does the planned town of Nowa Huta relate to the lived city of today?
