The region of Accra is one of the fastest-growing urban areas in Africa with a continuous demand for new development and infrastructure, in particular, a demand for housing. To respond to these needs in 2012 Africa’s largest urban land developer decided to turn 9,5 square kilometres of land on the Eastern plains of Accra into the city of Appolonia, also known as the City of Light. Appolonia was initiated by Rendeavour as a model to offer a bedroom community for middle- and high-income groups in Ghana as an alternative to the flooding, congestion, and poor housing construction quality in Accra.
The mixed-use plan incorporates schools, light industry, commercial facilities, business centre, healthcare, public open spaces and other urban amenities, in addition to mixed residential communities. They use five distinct house models: detached house (2 types), semi-detached house, apartments block, studio apartment. The result of a partnership between Rendeavour and Ghana Home Loans is new housing finance models to allow greater access to the project. There is also the possibility to purchase a plot and construct housing privately, albeit within specific design parameters. The business park is designed to accommodate a range of uses including manufacturing, processing, storage, logistics and service companies.
