Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) is an international center of excellence associated with the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) and operating on a global scale that offers specialized post graduate education, training, advisory services and applied research in the fields of urban management, housing and urban environment with the mission to develop human and institutional capacities to reduce poverty and improve the quality of life in cities.

IHS celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008. Founded in 1958 during the post-war reconstruction of Rotterdam, IHS was established to share the knowledge acquired in Rotterdam on housing and urban planning. Since then, IHS has evolved into a high-quality knowledge institution. In 2007, IHS won the un-habitat Scroll of Honour Award for leading the way as a global center of excellence and knowledge through its high quality teaching programs in housing, urban management and urban environmental management and planning. IHS utilizes its experience in applied knowledge on housing and urban development to help individuals, organizations and cities to find practical, relevant and strategic solutions to problems facing their cities. This approach enables cities throughout the world to plan sustainable futures. IHS is the International Institute for Urban Management of the Erasmus University Rotterdam and is situated on the university campus. EUR was founded in 1913 and has an excellent academic reputation; it is consistently ranked among the world’s leading universities by the Times Higher Education Supplement and other similar bodies. EUR has alliances with other leading universities, including the University of Cambridge and Harvard University.
