Workshop New Towns on 16 February 2011: Designing a Garden City?
Prof. Len de Klerk, February 2011

Having read the articles and after my introduction we organize a workshop, aiming to design a new garden city. This afternoon all groups are part of a planning consultancy office. This office is competing for a commission to design a complete new garden city in a rapidly growing metropolitan area.
The new garden city will be assessed by the fulfillment of goals like sustainability, ecology, perfect public transport and convenient community facilities as part of a fast growing metropolitan area of 3 million people.

How does the workshop work?

Choice: Each group chooses a specific theme – economy; social structure; urban design; public transport and infrastructure; living environment; recreation; democratic participation; etc…..

Thinking and designing (takes 45 minutes): Each group designs the headline of a theme program for the future Garden City; (such as: sustainability for a garden city design; the socio-demographic program; the economic program; the planning (where to start, phasing etc.) and the physical design principles like occupation pattern, density, location of facilities etc.
The key question for thinking and designing is this one: which from Howard’s genuine Garden City principles are still usable for your design; which ones will be deleted and replaced by new criteria and design principles?

Presentation: at the end each group gets max. 4 minutes to present the results.
